Who are the Palestinian refugees?
While many may associate Palestinian refugees solely with those displaced outside of Palestine following the 1948 war, it’s crucial to recognize that Palestinian refugee communities also exist within the West Bank and Gaza. In the West Bank, approximately 176,000 refugees inhabit around 22 camps, while in Gaza, there are about 478,000 refugees residing in 12 camps.
These populations, often overlooked in broader discussions, face unique challenges within the territories they call home. Understanding the diversity and complexity of Palestinian refugee experiences helps paint a more comprehensive picture of the ongoing humanitarian situation in the region.
How can they be refugees in their own country?
In 1948, the onset of attacks by Israeli armed groups compelled Palestinians to flee their towns, villages, and cities in search of safety. Many found refuge in the West Bank and Gaza, viewing these areas as temporary havens while clinging to the hope of one day returning to their homes. However, decades have passed, and their wait for repatriation continues. This enduring quest to reclaim their lost homes remains a poignant testament to the unresolved displacement and longing for justice among Palestinian refugees.

When should you arrive to begin your program?
We recommend arriving in Palestine one day prior to your selected start date to settle in and prepare for the experience. Additionally, you are welcome to stay an extra day after the program concludes to ensure a smooth and relaxed departure.
What visa do you need to volunteer in Palestine?
To volunteer to help Palestinian refugees in Palestine, you’ll need an Israeli tourist visa, which allows a stay of up to 3 months. Obtaining a volunteer visa directly in Palestine can be challenging, so it’s important to plan ahead.
Visa Requirements for Palestine
If you’re planning to volunteer to help Palestinian refugees, and you’re from a country with an exemption agreement with Israel, you can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge border crossing. Citizens from countries like the United States and many European nations typically receive a three-month visa, valid for 90 days.
However, if your home country does not have an exemption agreement with Israel, it is essential to obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before your visit. It’s worth noting that Israel now issues visas on a separate card containing a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Ensure to verify whether your native country participates in a visa exemption agreement.
What if your passport isn’t suitable for a tourist visa?
Unfortunately, if you wish to volunteer to help Palestinian refugees and are from countries like Pakistan or India, you must obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy in your home country. This process can be challenging, as Israel controls all entry points, making securing a visa a necessary step before starting your volunteer application.
Is the West Bank safe for volunteering?
Yes, the West Bank is generally safe for those who volunteer to help Palestinian refugees. Most incidents or conflicts occur in areas far from the main city centers, where volunteering programs are typically held. Cities like Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, where many volunteer programs take place, maintain a stable and safe environment.
Volunteers often find the local community welcoming and supportive, which adds to the overall feeling of security. Nevertheless, we encourage participants to stay updated on local news and follow any guidance provided by their hosts to ensure their safety.

Volunteering to help Palestinian refugees in Palestine doesn’t require prior experience. Our volunteer programs are open to individuals from all backgrounds, whether or not they have previous experience. We focus on creating a supportive environment where everyone can contribute, learn, and make a meaningful impact, regardless of their prior expertise.
