The Palestine Education Internship (1-12 Weeks) provides participants with insights into the challenges facing the education system in Palestine. These challenges stem from the occupation and the existence of two separate governments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This program is ideal for those interested in understanding the structure of Palestinian schools and universities, educational policies, funding issues, students’ educational needs, girls’ access to education, student safety, and other key aspects of the education sector in Palestine.

The Palestine Education Internship offers participants a comprehensive exploration of the country’s educational landscape, spanning public schools, private institutions, and universities. Through this program, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges facing education in Palestine—especially those stemming from the ongoing Israeli occupation. As part of the Palestine Education Internship, the visit also offers a chance to explore the curricula used in Palestinian schools and universities, highlighting how they adapt to the region’s unique political and social realities. Additionally, the program delves into the various specializations available in Palestinian universities, offering a comprehensive overview of higher education opportunities despite the existing challenges.

A Brief History of the Educational System in Palestine

For many years, school curricula in the West Bank and Gaza Strip mirrored those used in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Arab Republic of Egypt. This remained the standard until 1998 when a unified Palestinian curriculum was officially approved for implementation across both regions.

The new curricula were gradually introduced, starting in the 2000/2001 academic year with the first and sixth grades, with a plan to fully replace the old curricula within four years. Arabic and English are the primary languages of instruction in Palestinian schools.

The Importance of Education in Palestine

Education holds a central place in Palestinian society and is considered essential for social and economic stability. The displacement and loss experienced after the wars of 1948 and 1967, along with the resulting dependency on external support, made education a critical pathway for survival and progress, especially as agriculture, trade, and industry were no longer reliable sources of income for many Palestinians.

Palestinian families are known for their deep commitment to education, often making significant sacrifices to cover university expenses for their children. In return, families rely on financial support from their children once they secure employment, often abroad.

It is common for Palestinian students and their families to go to great lengths to secure admission to local universities. If this isn’t possible, they pursue opportunities at Arab universities, and if needed, they will bear the financial burdens of education at European or American institutions without hesitation.

The Palestine Education Internship Aspects

  • Key topics covered during these field visits include the history of education in Palestine, the structure of schools and universities, gender dynamics in education, challenges facing the education sector, private schooling, popular university majors, the cost of education in Palestine, post-graduation opportunities, and other related themes.

When Should You Arrive to Start Your Program?

We recommend arriving in Palestine a day before your chosen start date. This gives you time to settle in, get comfortable, and prepare for the experience. You can also stay an extra day after the program ends to ensure a smooth and relaxed departure. Whether you’re joining the Palestine Education Internship or another program, this added time helps you adjust and make the most of your stay.

What Visa Do You Need to Intern in Palestine?

To intern in Palestine, you’ll need an Israeli tourist visa, which typically allows you to stay for up to 3 months. Obtaining a specific internship visa directly in Palestine can be difficult, so the tourist visa is the most common and practical option for participants, including those in the Palestine Education Internship.

Visa Requirements for Palestine

If you’re joining the Palestine Education Internship and you’re from a country that has a visa exemption agreement with Israel, you can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge border crossing. Citizens of countries such as the United States and many European nations are typically granted a three-month visa upon arrival, making the entry process smooth and straightforward.

If your country doesn’t have an exemption agreement, you’ll need to get a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before traveling. Israel now issues visas on a separate card with a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Be sure to check if your country participates in a visa exemption agreement.

What If Your Passport Isn’t Suitable for a Tourist Visa?

If you’re planning to join the Palestine Education Internship and you’re from a country like Pakistan or India, you’ll need to apply for a visa from the Israeli embassy in your country before traveling. This step is essential, as Israel controls all entry points into Palestine, making the visa a requirement even before applying to the program. While the process may be challenging, our team is here to support you throughout your preparation.
