Overview of the Palestinian Legal System
The Palestinian legal system is a unique blend of diverse legal traditions shaped by its complex historical background. It seeks to address the distinct challenges faced by Palestinians, striving to harmonize modern governance principles with historical and cultural influences. Despite persistent challenges, significant efforts have been made to establish a legal framework that upholds justice and protects the rights of citizens.
Historical and Legal Foundations
Palestine’s legal system integrates elements from Islamic law, Ottoman law, and British common law. At its core lies the Palestinian Basic Law, which serves as a provisional constitution. It defines citizens’ rights and responsibilities, outlines the functions of government institutions, and regulates the balance of power among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. This hybrid legal structure reflects both traditional values and modern legal principles, aiming to create a stable and just society.
Court System and Legal Professionals
The Palestinian judiciary operates through a three-tiered court system: First Instance Courts, responsible for handling primary cases; Appeals Courts, tasked with reviewing lower court decisions; and the Supreme Court, which serves as the highest judicial authority for final appeals. Legal professionals, including judges and lawyers, play an essential role in maintaining the integrity of the legal system. The Palestinian Bar Association oversees legal practitioners, ensuring adherence to professional ethics and standards. Despite resource constraints and the ongoing political conflict, the commitment of legal professionals remains a cornerstone in advancing justice and promoting the rule of law in Palestine.

When Should You Arrive to Start Your Program?
For the Palestinian Law Firm Internship, we suggest arriving one day early. This gives you time to settle in and get ready. You can also stay an extra day after the program ends. It helps ensure a smooth and relaxed departure from Palestine.
What Visa Do You Need to Intern in Palestine?
To join the Palestinian Law Firm Internship, you’ll need an Israeli tourist visa. This visa lets you stay for up to 3 months. Getting a Palestinian internship visa directly is often difficult. That’s why the tourist visa is the best option.
Visa Requirements for Palestine
If you’re joining the Palestinian Law Firm Internship and you’re from a country with a visa exemption agreement with Israel, you can get a tourist visa on arrival. This applies at Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge. Citizens of the U.S. and many European countries usually receive a three-month visa automatically.
If your country doesn’t have an exemption agreement, you’ll need to get a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before traveling. Israel now issues visas on a separate card with a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Be sure to check if your country participates in a visa exemption agreement.
What If Your Passport Isn’t Suitable for a Tourist Visa?
If you’re joining the Palestinian Law Firm Internship and you’re from countries like Pakistan or India, you’ll need to apply for a visa at the Israeli embassy in your country. This step is mandatory before you travel. It can be challenging, since Israel controls all entry points, and the visa is required before you even apply to the program.
Is the West Bank Safe for Interning?
Yes, the West Bank is generally safe for interning. Most incidents occur in areas far from the main cities where Go Palestine programs are held. Cities like Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, where most programs take place, are stable and safe.
Interns often find the local community welcoming and supportive, which adds to the sense of security. However, we recommend staying updated on local news and following any safety advice from your hosts.
